Fraser Health: What you need to know and do about measles

June 2, 2025 10:27 AM

Please see the message below from Fraser Health:

As your Public Health and Preventive Medicine Doctors at Fraser Health, we are concerned about measles in Fraser region. Measles is a highly infectious and serious disease caused by a virus. It can lead to complications like pneumonia, encephalitis (swelling of the brain) and even death. We hope the information in this letter will help keep families protected from measles.

Measles cases are being reported now. The risk of measles infection and disease transmission is high among those not immune to measles.

To protect yourself, your family, and your community from measles infections and outbreaks, we recommend you take following steps within the next few weeks:

1. Know measles signs and symptoms:

  • Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, runny nose, and red and inflamed eyes, followed by a rash. The rash usually starts first on the face and neck, and spreads to the chest, arms and legs. It lasts about 4 to 7 days.

2. Check your family’s vaccination records and update your vaccinations as needed.

  • Go to to look up your and your children’s immunization records.
  • so your doctors and nurses have most up to date information.

3. Get vaccinated against measles:

  • Immunization is the best way to prevent measles and is very effective in preventing disease. Please check that you (if born after 1970) and your children have received at least two doses of measles containing vaccine.
  • Measles vaccination is given as a two-dose series:
  • Children are routinely provided with two doses of a measles-containing vaccine: The first dose is given as the at 12 months of age. The second dose is given as the around kindergarten entry, between 4 to 6 years of age.
  • In Fraser Health, measles vaccines are available at and physician offices, as well as at .

4. Stay home when sick:

If your children have symptoms of measles, please keep them home. Please avoid sending the children to schools, to group activities, classes or parties and other social events, while they are symptomatic. This will protect your friends and families, other school children and staff, as well as members of public.

  • If you need to seek healthcare and are worried you or your children may have measles, please call ahead. This allows clinics and hospitals to put in measures to limit the risk of spreading measles to other patients and staff.

We work to keep our communities safe and healthy. Let us work together to prevent an outbreak that affects our schools and communities.

Sincerely,

Medical Health Officers at Fraser Health

Registration for Student Transportation 2025/26

Read the latest update: REMINDER: Registration for Student Transportation 2025/26

Registration for students eligible for school district transportation for the 2025/26 school year is now open and will close at 4:00 pm on June 27, 2025.

RegularÌýstudentÌýtransportationÌýis available for eligibleÌýstudentsÌýliving and attendingÌýschoolÌýin the followingÌýschoolÌýcatchments:Ìý

  • Highland Park ElementaryÌý
  • Pitt Meadows SecondaryÌý
  • Webster’s Corners ElementaryÌý
  • Whonnock ElementaryÌý

*As part of the 2025/26 budget process, the Board of Education made the decision to discontinue the routes serving Garibaldi Secondary students living in the Silver Valley and Rockridge areas. This decision was driven by escalating financial pressures and the need to focus limited resources on core educational services. In making this decision, the board also considered low ridership on the routes, the availability of public transit, and recent infrastructure improvements in the affected areas (e.g., sidewalks, lighting, and crosswalks). Coast Mountain Bus Company has indicated that they have the ability to adjust service levels and timing in the area to better align with school schedules. If Coast Mountain is unable to increase service levels, the district will explore a full cost recovery model that could allow for the reinstatement of one or both routes, with fees set to fully cover the cost of the service.Ìý

Letter for families regarding Saturday’s tragedy at Lapu Lapu Day celebration

April 28, 2025 8:56 AM

Dear families,

Saturday’s devastating incident at the Lapu Lapu celebrations in Vancouver are understandably upsetting for adults and children alike. It is often hard to know how to reassure our children when we ourselves are striving to process and make sense of these losses. Children may experience a wide range of emotions in response to what they hear or see; it is important to remember that they will look to the adults in their lives to help them feel safe and to make sense of the world. As a parent or caregiver, you may feel unprepared to help your child understand and process these events. We are reaching out to share with you some strategies and resources that will help guide your conversations with your child with the understanding that people are going to be impacted in a variety of ways, based on age and development as well as their own involvement and connection to this terrible tragedy.
